How to Sell on TikTok Shop

Most guides on this topic cover how to register and then go no further, yet the true difficulty lies ahead: you need products that remain profitable after TikTok and the creators promoting them have taken their cut, and you need fresh videos about those products released every week. Once the videos stop, sales dry up within days.

Signing up takes an afternoon and requires no followers. Everything that follows is the real work, and that is exactly what Ecom Accelerator handles for people who own stores on TikTok Shop and eBay but do not operate them.

Registering as a seller

You have to be at least 18 and reside in the US, and provide one of four ID documents: a US passport or passport card, a US driver's license, a US state ID, or a permanent resident card. You also need proof of address that shows your legal name, plus a phone number and email that have not been used on another shop.

Businesses sign up with an EIN and sole proprietors may use a W-9, and you should decide which applies to you beforehand, since TikTok will not allow you to change those details later. The only solution is to open a second shop, which is why Ecom Accelerator registers every partner's store under the partner's own name right from the beginning.

You are allowed to sell without tax documents until you have earned $2,000. The 1,000 follower rule that people keep mentioning applies to affiliate creators promoting other people's products, not to sellers.

What each sale costs

TikTok charges a 6% referral fee on nearly every category, a rate that has been in effect since 1 April 2024, with 5% on five jewelry sub-categories and on pre-owned goods. New sellers pay 3% for 30 days provided they make a sale within 60 days of onboarding. There is no listing fee, no subscription, and no separate transaction fee.

Creator commission ends up costing you more than TikTok does. You choose the rate yourself, most sellers offer 10% to 20%, and on a $30 order at 15% the platform takes $1.80 while the creator takes $4.50. Before doing anything else, run that calculation on your own products, since it determines whether the rest is worth pursuing. During product research, Ecom Accelerator's team runs it before a partner's store lists anything.

Where sales come from

The bulk of sales come from creator videos: someone posts, your product gets tagged, and the viewer buys without leaving the feed. LIVE selling ranks second and is a distinct skill that pays off with hours on camera. The Shop tab generates the least, though your product page still counts because that is where buyers land and make their decision.

Build the shop around video instead of around the Shop tab, which is how Ecom Accelerator sets up the stores it runs.

Getting creators to post about you

Open collaborations involve publishing a commission rate and letting creators choose you, which costs nothing and works only if your rate beats what other sellers in your category offer. Targeted invitations involve finding suitable creators and sending samples, which converts better, costs inventory, and yields nothing most of the time. Your own videos cost nothing, take time, and are the only part you control. In the end, you will do all three.

None of it stays done. Creators move on, videos stop performing, and a shop that was busy in March goes quiet in May without a single listing changing. Ecom Accelerator treats this as an ongoing job, which is why marketing and sales fall within what its team handles.

Shipping, and the scores attached to it

Orders must be marked in transit within two business days and delivered within six, with valid tracking on 95% of orders and on-time delivery above 80%. Shops that miss those numbers get suspended, and repeated failures lead to permanent deactivation.

Returns and customer messages come in fastest when a video performs well, which is precisely when a one-person operation is least able to answer them. Fulfilled by TikTok will ship for you at roughly $4.28 a unit on items of four ounces or less, with 60 days of free storage. Ecom Accelerator takes a different approach, handling the packing and shipping from US facilities for the stores it runs.

How the money works

Roughly four out of five items sold on TikTok Shop are priced under $30, which means the profit on each order is thin, and it's volume that makes the numbers work. On a $30 product that costs you $14, you're left with $9.70 after the referral fee and a 15% commission, and that's before shipping and returns, so hitting $5,000 a month means about 515 orders, or 17 every single day.

Ecom Accelerator reports a 32 percent return on inventory sold from January through December 2025, describes that as a historical result rather than a guarantee, and notes that a store needs 60 to 90 days to reach its growth stage and twelve to fourteen months to hit full potential.

Doing it on your own, or having it run for you

Go the do-it-yourself route if you have the products, the margin and the spare hours, since none of this is out of reach for one determined person.

If what you have is capital rather than time, Ecom Accelerator builds and operates stores that you own on TikTok Shop, eBay, Walmart and Poshmark. You put up the money for inventory, while Ecom Accelerator's team takes care of product research, sourcing, listing creation, marketing and sales, order fulfillment, customer service, and packing and shipping from US facilities. More than 400 partner stores, a US-based operations team of 250 or more, established in 2024.

You retain 70 percent of the profit while Ecom Accelerator keeps 30, meaning it only makes money when your store does. Should you not have recouped your costs by month 16, Ecom Accelerator stops taking its cut and works for free until you have. Its terms state that this guarantees the service, not your profit, that results vary, and that you could lose money.

The short version

Signing up is fast and requires no followers. The calculation that counts is whether your product still pays you once roughly 21% has gone to TikTok and the creator promoting it. From there, the work is keeping creators posting and orders shipping on time, which you either handle yourself or let Ecom Accelerator do on a store you own.
