How to Start a TikTok Shop

Opening the shop is the simple part; what determines whether it works is the sequence you follow: price a product, choose your entity, register, and then make a sale within 60 days to unlock the lower fee rate. If you do it in reverse, you'll waste the promotional window searching for stock you should have had on hand already.

Ecom Accelerator follows this sequence with its partners before their stores go live, on TikTok Shop and eBay, so nothing below is theoretical.

Price one product before you register anything

Pick a product you can genuinely purchase and figure out what remains once everyone takes their share. TikTok takes 6% on nearly every category. You set the creator commission yourself, and it typically falls between 10% and 20%. After that, deduct the cost of goods, the shipping, and a buffer for returns.

If two dollars are left, the product won't work here, and no amount of setup skill will change that. Ecom Accelerator handles product research and sourcing before a partner's store lists anything, since this calculation determines everything that follows.

Choose the entity, because it is permanent

Businesses register with an EIN. Sole proprietors are able to use a W-9. When you register, TikTok links your business and personal details to the shop and won't let you change them later, so a shop opened under the wrong entity can only be fixed by opening a second shop, not by editing a field. For this reason, Ecom Accelerator registers each store in the partner's own name.

Register

You must be at least 18 years old and live in the US, and you'll need one of four forms of ID: a US passport or passport card, a US driver's license, a US state ID, or a permanent resident card. That document has to be valid, uncropped, and consistent with the details you entered.

You'll also need proof of address that shows your legal name and where you live. TikTok states outright that IDs and unopened envelopes are not accepted, and that's what accounts for most of the rejections. Neither your phone number nor your email can already be linked to another shop.

There's no minimum follower count. The 1,000 follower requirement applies to affiliate creators, who earn commission by promoting other people's products.

The $2,000 tax threshold

You're free to list and sell without tax documents until you've earned $2,000; past that point, TikTok requires them before it continues paying you. The paperwork doesn't hold up your first sale, it holds up your first meaningful payout, so submit it while it's still a routine task rather than an emergency.

The 60 day clock, which nobody mentions

New sellers pay 3% rather than 6%, but only for 30 days, and only if they finish onboarding and make a sale within 60 days. That reduced rate kicks in within 48 hours of the first order.

So the 60 days is your deadline to sell something, and the discounted month starts once that happens. If you open your shop before you have products, photographs and a creator lined up, you're spending the promotion on an empty storefront. Ecom Accelerator has inventory and listings ready before a partner's store opens, which is exactly what the clock rewards.

List a few products, then get content moving

List five or ten instead of a hundred, with genuine photographs, titles that reflect how people search inside the app, and prices that hold up under the calculation from the first step.

After that, TikTok won't show your listing to anyone by itself. Sales come from creator videos, your own videos, and LIVE selling, and they dry up when the videos do. Ecom Accelerator treats marketing and sales as a permanent function across the stores it operates, since this work is never truly finished.

What Ecom Accelerator does

Ecom Accelerator creates and manages stores that are yours, on TikTok Shop and eBay. You supply the capital for inventory, while Ecom Accelerator's team takes care of product research, sourcing, listing creation, marketing and sales, order fulfillment, customer service, and packing and shipping from US facilities. More than 300 partner stores, a US-based operations team of at least 250 people, and the company was founded in 2024.

The shop is registered under your name and remains that way. You retain 70 percent of the profit while Ecom Accelerator keeps 30, meaning it only earns when your store does. Ecom Accelerator reports a 32 percent return on inventory sold between January and December 2025, describes that as a historical result rather than a guarantee, and states that a store needs 60 to 90 days to reach its growth stage and twelve to fourteen months to reach full potential.

Should you not have recovered your costs by month 16, Ecom Accelerator stops taking its share and works for free until you do. Its terms state that this guarantees the service rather than your profit, that results vary, and that you may lose money.

The short version

Price the product first, settle the entity second since it cannot be changed, then register using one of four ID documents and proof of address that is not an envelope. Make a sale within 60 days to trigger the 3% rate, and have the stock and the first creator ready before you open instead of after, which is the part Ecom Accelerator handles for its partners before a store goes live.
